A note from Tony Geftos

Band Ten-Hut! Ok, parade rest...

It's great to be back here at AW! For those of you just tuning in, I'm Tony. At work, I'm the Senior Reporter for 13ABC. At home, I'm dad. And on the marching field, I'm an alto sax player.

I started marching for the Pirates at Riverview Community High School in downriver Detroit. I am proud to say I stuck with it all four years, even though our band was small and often out of tune. We were a tight group, and the memories will last a lifetime.

Tony Geftos in his high school band uniform, grade 9, Freshman year, 1990

In college, I moved on to the Western Michigan University Bronco Marching Band, where I also put in a fun and memorable 4 years. It was a big step into a band that topped 220. My Junior year, I realized I'm a better marcher than musician, so I became a drill instructor. I'll be watching to see who has perfect 8-to-5 lines, everyone. Cover down!

Back to being a musician … During high school, I was a part of the band at Henry Ford Community College, and the Michigan All-State Band. In college, I summered with the Dearborn Community Band. And after graduating, I played with the Casper Wyoming Municipal Band and the Findlay Civic Concert Band.

And yes, I'm a sax player. But the only time I took a "1" at state was playing timpani for a percussion ensemble. What's up with that?!

I'm currently "in-between" gigs, but remember this: A band will always be waiting for you. It's like a family. The talents you foster in school will stick with you for life. And you can always find somewhere to fit in and some way to express yourself.

Alright, now-- Mark-Time-Mark!!

Tony Geftos, Senior Reporter WTVG 13 ABC
