The Marching Generals entered the WTOL/BGSU Battle of the Bands contest. We need your vote, every day this week (October 18-24)! See awbands.com (our still under construction site just for band fans) for more information.

As our High School Marching Band continues to grow (we currently have over 170 students enrolled), we want to review the steps that must be completed in conjunction with band camp starting on August 8th, 2011.
1. Review the 2011 band camp schedule. In general, morning and evening practices the first week, evening practices the second week. Two parades on August 20th and Preview Night on August 23rd.
2. Complete a physical examination and file it with the band office. You have 2 options:
3. Complete the Emergency Medical Form (PDF) and file it with the band office before camp begins.
4. Get fitted for your uniform and pay your uniform fees.
There is "early bird" uniform fittings on August 4th, from 10am to 4pm. This is a great time for returning band members to make sure their uniform still fits. Returning students need to bring their tote, spats, gloves, ascot, shoes (both pair), tee shirt and shorts so that they can be checked for condition as well as fit. Fittings on this day will be on a first come, first serve basis.
Additional uniform fitting sessions are based on the first letter of your last name.
| Last name begins with | Fitting date/time |
| A-F | Monday, August 8th, 12:00pm - 2:30pm |
| G-L | Monday, August 8th, 2:30pm - 5:00pm |
| M-R | Tuesday, August 9th, 12:00pm - 2:30pm |
| S-Z | Tuesday, August 9th, 2:30pm - 5:00pm |
During fitting, freshmen will be given a tote to organize and carry uniform items (spats, gloves, ascot, shoes, tee shirt & shorts) to and from performances.
Review the list of uniform fees (PDF) ahead of time so you know what to expect during the fitting sessions. Also, students who use school-owned instruments will need to sign a rental agreement and pay a maintenance fee of $50 for the year.
5. Parents may optionally want to attend the August 8th Band Booster meeting (7pm in the AWHS Auditorium). All band parents and anyone else interested in supporting the band are invited to join us. You can ask questions about band camp and getting ready for the 2011-12 marching band season. Plus, you can learn about what the Band Boosters are working on, with opportunities to volunteer to help out.
The AW Generals will be participating in the Ohio State Skull Session on October 23. The Skull Session begins at 10:00am and we will perform music before the start of the event and also a piece during the show. The Skull Session is presented by the Ohio State University Marching Band as a final run through of their music for the football game that afternoon. The Ohio State Fall Athletic Band will also be performing at this Skull Session. More about the Skull Session.
After the show, we will be going to Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant for Lunch. Cost for the meal will be $20 per person and can be given to Mr. Young. Please see the schedule below.
You can mark your attendance at the Facebook event if you want.
Advice from a recent OSUMB Parent...
Skull Session is a Pep/Band Concert which primarily functions as the band's last time to run through all of the music of the day (and get it into their skulls) prior to game time. It follows an indoor practice and outdoor run through which start prior to 7:00 a.m.
Skull Session starts 2 hours prior to game time and sometimes 10 - 15 minutes earlier depending on the schedule of the team and the OSUMB's plans for additional performances by cheer groups (e.g., Stadium Cheers, Tuba 4's, Horn Cheers, Bone Cheers, etc.) A High School or other band is generally included to play one song during Skull Session. The more significant performance of the HS band is its function as the warm up band for the OSUMB which is usually between 9:00 and 9:30 for the adoring masses that start assembling in St. John Arena around 7:30 (with lines forming outside around or before 7:00) for the best seats. The serious OSUMB fans and parents will take the best seats (down low in the first 12 - 20 rows and in front of the OSUMB) by 8:15. Respectable seats in the lower half and front of the OSUMB are typically still available around 9:00. After 9:00 the lower sections close and only seats in the top (steep) balcony area are available. Seat demand is largely dependent on the size and demand of the game along with locale of the HS band to Columbus. Although we are not close to Columbus the impact of the OSU Athletic Band also performing with us could increase seat demand.
As an OSUMB parent, I was generally successful in arriving between 8:15 and 8:30 to obtain a nice seat. This meant leaving Whitehouse at 5:45 a.m. or earlier. The later you leave the more likely you will get hung up in traffic. Time to park and walk to St. John's is also a factor. I would recommend exiting SR315 at the Kinnear exit and bypass the Lane Avenue exit and traffic. Park south of the Shoe (we use the parking garage on 12th Avenue across from the OSU Med Center) and walk by the band practice field on the way to St. John's. Parking is $15.00.
In addition, seats in St. John's can be saved in large quantities. But you will need to make sure that the ushers at a potentially closed entrance will let your late arriving family members in. You could have one family member save seats with programs, jackets, etc., while the rest enjoy the OSUMB outdoor practice of half-time and pre-game (including Script Ohio) which occurs on the practice field which is south of the "Shoe" and east of Lincoln and Morrell Towers (those two really tall dorms). The band runs through the entire day and it would be a nice opportunity for younger siblings to see the band. That practice starts at 8:00 a.m. and is done by 9:00. The hillside to the west of and next to the field and under the towers allows you to see the formations pretty well.
It is generally worth arriving early to avoid the heavy traffic and crowds so you can relax and enjoy it all. Have fun and Go Bucks!
Marching Band practice before the start of school (aka Band Camp) takes place the first 3 weeks of August. Eight evening sessions from 6-9:30pm lead up to Preview Night and then the first day of school.
Week #1: Camp starts on Tuesday, August 3 with Freshman, new students and Seniors meeting from 8 to 11am. Evening sessions (for everyone) are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (August 3-5). Uniform fitting is 9am-5pm on Tuesday & Wednesday.
Week #2 (Spirit Week): Evening sessions Monday thru Thursday, August 9-12. Pictures will be taken on Tuesday the 10th (instead of August 18th as was previously reported). Band physicals are from 10am to 4pm on the 12th.
Week #3: The final practice session is Monday evening, August 16th. Band Preview will be Tuesday, August 17th at 7pm. This is the band's first performance of the season. Students should report at 6pm.
The first day of school is Thursday, August 19th. Normal after school rehearsals (3:15 - 5pm) start on that day.
Marching Band rehearsals will be 3:15pm - 5:00pm from August 19th (the first day of school) until mid November. From August through October, rehearsals are Monday-Thursday on typical weeks, but there are several times when there is no Monday rehearsal (August 30, September 6, September 27, October 11, October 18).
In November, we go to a Tuesday-Thursday schedule, with no rehearsal on November 11th (school conferences).
Download the Printable Calendar (v2, August 2 update) (PDF) for the full listing.
(Rehearsals will be added to the web site calendar a week or so in advance.)
